Black Owned: Post Office Studios

Having a black owned studio space in Tacoma has been such an interesting business to watch people operate. I have had a front row seat over the 15+ years my friends having been making music in Tacoma and abroad so unfortunately I’ve seen a bit of it all. It’s full of misplanned scheduling and rescheduling; it can be a headache honestly. Then there is the issue of location, often in a building with too limited or too much access. But the alternative is having to deal with engineers and studio owners that are white and have no idea what the final product is suppose to sound like. Or they have some mighty morphed perspective of rap, wild ideals that would floor most black creatives.

I’m not saying the Post Office Studios doesn’t have its issues, any studio space is going to have its quirks but the energy in the room is never an issue. Owners Quincy and Matt won’t let it happen. There is a screening process at Post Office Studios like there are for most studio spaces - a light interrogation from Matt to make sure you aren’t just sitting around and wasting everyone's life. That is another big separator for the Post Office Studios crew, it is not a cash grab like we have seen with several other black owned studio spaces in Tacoma. They are not letting you into the space just so you can “act” like an artist. If you are not stepping into the space to work on something in a productive matter they may not let you book it out no matter how many $$$ you flash. There is an integrity within the content at Post Office that rings true to the space and the work that comes out of there.

Artists like Perry Porter, UGLYFRANK, Yung Wolf, Jiggy Jerms, KHRIS P, GLENN and TBG have all utilized the space at one time or another and several artists from up North and out of town. It where the magic happens.

Reaching out to @baloogz or @djqj_ are the best ways to get in contact and see if there is booking available.
